VELCRO® Brand FAQs
Leo G. Stein Brand FAQs
Q: Which side of the VELCRO® Brand fastener is which?
The soft, fuzzy side is the loop, and the rough, scratchy side is the hook side of VELCRO® Brand products. In military terminology, the loop side is sometimes referred to as "pile."
Q: Are there different strengths of hook and loop material?
Yes, there are various strengths of VELCRO® Brand material, ranging from easily peeled to nearly permanent. The cycle life, or the number of closures the fastener can endure before showing wear, is shorter with very strong VELCRO® Brand fasteners compared to those that separate more easily. For many applications, the combination of hook 88 and loop 1000 is preferred for its balance of strength and durability.
Q: Does the pressure-sensitive adhesive (Peel & Stick, or PS) work well on most surfaces?
Yes, depending on your application, there is an adhesive that should suit your needs. Key considerations include the substrate (the surface the adhesive sticks to), the temperature range, and the environment. Generally, the PS 0172 Acrylic adhesive performs well across a wide range of applications, particularly above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This adhesive typically cures in about 24 hours and is considered a standard heavy-duty peel and stick option. The PS 0115 Rubber adhesive is suitable for most room temperature applications and cures in approximately 8 hours. For elevated temperatures (up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit) or wet environments, the PS 0174 adhesive provides strong adhesion.
Q: What is the widest VELCRO® Brand fastener I can get?
The widest option for Sew on hook and loop is 4 inches, which also applies to Peel & Stick hook and loop. The loop side is available in Wide Loop 3001, offered in two widths: Heavy Duty Loop 3001, similar to Loop 1000, comes in Black or White with a width of 60 inches, sold by the lineal yard. Additionally, Wide Loop 3001 is available in a 24-inch width, specifically in Black, sold by the lineal yard as well.
Q: How is the VELCRO® Brand fastener sold?
Apart from consumer products, VELCRO® Brand fasteners are typically sold on 25-yard rolls, with the hook and loop components separated. Sew-on fasteners may be available on 50-yard rolls occasionally. Each component (hook or loop) is sold on its own roll, allowing you to purchase either side individually, usually at the same price.
Q: Are there stretchy VELCRO® Brand fasteners available?
Yes, we offer a product called VELCRO® Brand VELSTRETCH® loop, which is the loop side of the VELCRO® Brand fastener woven with elastic, making it stretchable. Please note that the hook side is not available in this type.
Q: Can I get colors other than Black or White?
VELCRO® Brand fasteners are available in a variety of colors for bulk orders. We can accommodate small orders for special colors if the product is available in one of our warehouses. Prices are consistent with those of Black or White fasteners, with a minimum order of 50 yards per color, per side.
Q: Can I get customized straps made from VELCRO® Brand material?
Yes, we produce custom face straps, back straps, cinch straps, and two-way face straps using VELCRO® Brand fasteners.
Q: Is there a more permanent adhesive than the peel and stick?
Yes. There are solvent-activated and heat-activated adhesives that come dry on the back of VELCRO® Brand fasteners. These adhesives can be activated by heat (e.g., from an iron) or by a solvent (e.g., acetone). For the most permanent bond, use these fasteners with contact cement. Apply contact cement to both the back of the VELCRO® Brand fasteners and your item, let it take for 1 minute, press them together, and allow it to dry overnight.
Q: Are VELCRO® Brand fasteners available in round circles?
Yes, you can purchase VELCRO® Brand VELCOIN® fasteners, which come in separate rolls of hook and loop, each equivalent to 25 yards. The sizes range from 1/2 inch to 1 3/8 inches in width, with quantities per roll varying based on the size.
Q: Are VELCRO® Brand fasteners available in cut pieces?
Yes, we can cut VELCRO® Brand strips, squares, or rectangles for you using our specialized cutting machine. There is no charge for cut lengths over 1 inch.
